About Matthew

I first discovered yoga, while recovering from a life threatening car accident, in 1996. It was the summer after my first year in college, and my car was struck head on by a drunk driver. Both of my legs were severely broken, and it took me 3 years and 20 surgeries to get back on my feet.

Before the accident, I was an All American Lacrosse Player and I was recruited to play on the men’s varsity lacrosse team at Middlebury College. But, after the accident I could neither run nor play lacrosse. This was devastating, and the most challenging experience of my life. I, not only lost what I was most passionate about in life, but also that which defined me. Nonetheless, I started to realize, that when one door closes another door opens.
In the rehabilitative stage of this process, I went to both physical therapy and psychotherapy, and while both forms of therapy were helpful, something unfamiliar was calling me: I wanted something more “spiritual” per se. Upon the reference of a friend, I answered the call by seeking out a “healer,” named Mark Berland of Somerville, MA. Upon many other things, Mark showed me my first yoga postures (child’s pose and standing forward bend), which brought new relief to my body, and a feeling of relaxation to my mind.

From here, yoga became my life interest. I studied in yoga studios, schools, and retreat centers, as well as in my living room through my own personal practice. By this time I had transferred from Middlebury College to University of Vermont, where I earned a BA degree in anthropology. Guided by my own relationship with yoga, as someone who has found ways to adapt yoga to meet the needs of my injured body, I later wrote a graduate thesis on how to make yoga accessible to students, such as those with limitations, which includes every body in one way or another.

Presently, I teach yoga classes, private sessions, and I assist teacher trainings. At home I continue to explore yoga on my own as a way to create health and well-being in my life. And, as a teacher I offer safe and effective instruction that encourages and inspires students to be present in their bodies and minds, which becomes a tool for growth, both on and off the mat. I thank all my teachers for their support and guidance, and I invite you to a class or session soon!
